The Social Justice Education Approach: Towards a New Cultural Model of Education?

Abstract

This article examines the importance of applying the social justice education approach to contemporary society. In order to achieve this, the starting point is the theoretical framing of the relationship between social justice and praxis; firstly, highlighting the need to place the human being at the centre of the reflections and then analysing some aspects of the critical pedagogy of Paulo Freire, who can be considered the forerunner of social justice education. Subsequently, the main theoretical references (known to date) and the application of the social justice education approach within the Italian educational system will then be recalled, analysing the sector policies adopted, also through the analysis of international documents issued by the European Union or other bodies such as UNESCO, in order to understand the forms and declinations this approach takes in Italy.
